Edinburgh the cultured, and cultural, capital of Scotland has a great deal to offer the visitor.
If your interest is history, then Edinburgh has a wealth of fascinating places to see. There's Edinburgh Castle itself of course, but also St. Giles Cathedral, and Holyrood Palace, to name but two. Try Historic Scotland for more details.
The City is home to the Edinburgh Festival in August every year, as well as the alternative 'Fringe' Festival. Some events are quite eccentric, and the audience needs to be broad-minded. It features a whole range of dramas and comedies, some on rather odd 'stages' - a play in an elevator for example - six people constitutes a full house! But there are many regular events in Edinburgh including the Film Festival, Book Festival and annual Hogmanay celebrations at New Year. See Edinburgh's Inspiring Capital website.
For the sport-minded, Edinburgh offers a wide range of activities. Find the largest dry-ski slope in Europe at Midlothian Ski Centre, or visit the home of Scottish Rugby Union at Murrayfield. The National Rock Climbing Centre of Scotland at Ratho Adventure Centre offers all sorts of adventurous activities.
If something a little more relaxing has greater appeal, then as well as theatres, cinemas, art galleries and libraries, there's Edinburgh Zoo - just around the corner from McNeil House - Edinburgh Zoological Gardens.
Other places of well-known interest include the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery, these last two being within walking distance of McNeil House. There are other art galleries too. And don't forget the Royal Yacht Britannia.
